CHRIS PORSZ – STREET PHOTOGRAPHER

Snatch and grab or wait and see!

Three decades ago I was a little shyer so I  used a  telephoto mostly , regretably blurred out old  buildings and did more candid. My style has changed somewhat  and I am finding I often get more pleasing results when I engage with my subject. It is the eye contact and animation that  is the difference between a mediocre shot and a little gem.

To illustrate this my first picture was candid so as  to get one in the can and the second was this spontaneous reaction to me and my camera. What do you think and what is your style and technique.  Please  comment and feel free to add the link to your favourite  images.

Hi Chris,
A lot of people say that street photography is candid only. Which would mean that newly discovered Vivian Maier is not a street photographer. I believe that to tell a story street candids and street portraits are necessary (just like V Maier beautifully showed in her work). Making a connection with the subject is more difficult than candid photography but I think both complement each other just like your example demonstrates.

I like candids when the scene is intended to be a 3 person documentary...I find them somewhat sterile and usually lacking in intimacy. That being said, the first image seems to convey the emotion of a grumpy elder pair. The second image actually shows a different side of the male subject. I can imagine being there and seeing this guy clowning around for the camera. If the point was to showcase a pair of dreary older people, then the first one is spot on. If the point is to show that everyone has a youthful excitement for the camera, then the second shot works...even the shopkeeper on the left is interested in the second shot.

Many thanks Valerie and Adam for taking the time to comment. What you both say makes alot of common sense. Good point about the amazing Vivian Maier. The man spontaneously reacted to me and my camera. His wife was so surprised by him that she nearly fell out of her buggy!
